This is my first Rushdie book by the way

From what I've read, it's not a satire or criticism of Islam, there's just stuff that can be considered blasphemous.
Midnight's children is better.

I put it away for good half way through. Just a boring, postmodern kind of fantasy novel (nothing against postmodern novels, there are good ones, but this one isn't imo). I didn't even understood why some muslims felt offended by it - but I can't imagine this book sold as many copies as it did without said "publicity stunt".

what is some good postmodern stuff then? Why do you think it was a publicity stunt?

I don't think it was a publicity stunt (that's why I put it in quotation marks) - nevertheless, the novel got a lot more attention by it then it deserved.

A lot of Eco's novels are really nice, I like the early stuff of Ransmeyer, DeLillo is worth mentioning, and I'm sure half of this board would recommend Pynchon and DFW. Imo Eco is the best of all of them, but you may put that up to discussion - it's just an aesthetical preference of mine.
