Let's put it this way, you can write clever and wise characters, it just takes careful thought and confidence. But to write intelligent characters, especially within a certain field, the amount of studying you'd need to do to get the information right would basically leave you knowledgeable in the field.
Find an authentic voice first. And be sure if you wish to write an intelligent character that you're ready for a daunting task.
