I second this - I have a 'practical' degree and all it got me was a well-paying job that is stupifyingly boring, involves horrible office politics, and tends to use all of my mental energy. When I worked labor (albeit briefly), I found that I would come home physically tired and yet be able to read for hours, study Latin with fantastic retention, and write a solid journal entry every day, which were far more interesting and full of ideas than the ones I can write now. Trades are not only compensated as well as or better than many office jobs, they don't involve staring at the Microsoft Office suite for 50 hours a week. Trades are some of the few jobs today that remain that involve ingenuity and physical work, which are two of the things that I think best suit people.
