What are the best books of history? I'm looking for stuff more about an era or event, rather than of a specific person (i.e., don't recommend Caro's LBJ or other biographies please,) and prefer something more political history aligned. Have already read Thucydides and The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich.
What era OP? This is probably what you're looking for:
>The Story of Civilization - Will Durant
11 volume series, each volume covers a well defined age in human history, excellent writing. I am reading volume II, The Life of Greece right now, there's so many details to take in, he covers it all from family customs to mythology to art to philosophy. Each volume is also self contained, so you can start at any point.

I enjoyed this as pop history, but you have to be more specific.
