question about this book: there's a fairly new edition of "the man without qualities" out on picador. what's weird is that it's 1152 pages, whereas the older two-volume release runs for about 1800 pages. i'd like to know if something (and if so what) is missing in this new edition, or if the new page count can be chalked up to, i don't know, reformatting or a fresh translation or something. thanks!

Too long to be an abridgement, and unlikely because it's Picador.
Know M&D's a Picador paper, however, and the typography in that one's fairly large, but also an original release.
Gotta be smaller type, more lines to page.
Check review of translation in NYRB.
Did a little research- the older version's the superior

in what way?
The 1800 page one includes about 700 pages of his unpublished work. Music died before he could finish the novel. It's a compilation of what he had written but never published and his notes about the directions he wanted to take the novel.
1100 sounds about the page length of what was published.

>topic: old or new translation?
looked elsewhere too but this most succinct. compares a long passage from each version, etc.
