What's a good book about somebody working hard toward a skill, or a career, or an understanding of something technical? I'm not really sure how to phrase exactly what I'm looking for... I've always loved scenes that detail somebody hard at work or working through something over a long period of time, really just focusing in on the problem. I recently read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle maintenance and I loved the scenes where he's describing how he works on motorcycle repairs -- the serenity of mind he has, how he figures things out, feeling of relief afterward, etc. And I've always loved movies / TV scenes like this as well, e.g. in Mr Robot when Elliot is coding for the entire night and Magnus which shows the routine and focus of a legendary chess player.
I guess to be truthful I want something that'll motivate me toward working hard on things. Lately I've been pretty lazy.
The Name of the Wind? It's a piece of shit book, but it matches what you're looking for.

What you're talking about is the flow state, and being able to drop into it is the result of years of dedicated practice and study, not some magical sequence of words that unlocks an ability.
Over time, as you discipline yourself to do a certain thing, you become able to do it for longer and longer willfully. It's no different than running. Once you get to a certain level though the need to be willful drops away.
It's when you're sufficiently into a subject that you can run entirely on intuition and the problems you have to solve are so complicated that they require an intelligence that has reached that level of dexterity and familiarity with the subject.
