yeats got me into poetry desu
When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;
How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;
And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.
just get one of these:
Helen Vendler's "Poetry and Voices"
Society of Classical Poets "how to write classical poetry" (still gives you a good basis)
Lots of Yeats
Robert frost

i can imagine a newbie to poetry reading Ode to a Nightingale and scratching their head
William Carlos Williams
John Barryman
Dylan Thomas
Do skip the romantics they will turn you off and for good reason. Wouldn't go contemporary either since it's trash mostly. The Moderns were the pinnacle of English poetry (aside from Shakespeare ofc)

what's wrong with the romantics? That's where I started

I for one feel they are not accessible without context. Then again I started with the Moderns so it might just be bias desu a good in between the two would be DH Lawrence but there are few writers as inconsistent as he was.

It is a good teaching poem on deciphering
