"A real artist respects the silence, which serves as the foundation of all creativity." What did he mean by this?

Nothingness on one hand originates all existential problems - like the fear of annihilation - on the other it defines the possibility of identity, because identity is what's outside nothingness.

An artist should realize that everything that his work is not, is also important.

This should be most evident in photography. The camera, in an instant, imprisons within a frame a fraction of light traveling through space and time, on a film or sensor.

This frame excludes all other reality, for eternity from everlasting, which is just as important as whatever actually made it into the picture, if not more so, as it is the pre-condition of the picture's very own existence.

1. His actual quote was: "An artist respects the silence that serves as the foundation of creativity."
2. In silence an artist's mind may work "best." That is to say: the artist's mind when at work is on "high speed," but when at rest the artist's mind is in a "low churn hum," if you will. It never turns off. Some turn to drink or drugs to help turn their artistry off, but that's about all they can hope to do. For an artist, the art never stops. It cannot. Not if you're a true artist. And, for most artists, the high speed churn of creative output takes a lot out of you. An artist needs a lot of down time. And it's in these down time periods where this silence enters and becomes so very valuable. Because the artist knows that he may be just as productive or even more productive from those silences, where his mind is quieted but ever so active, on low hum. You cannot turn off art. It's not possible. It's always on. Respect the silence. It is a deep well indeed.

What do you mean? This guy is clearly Martin Heidegger himself, the interpretations are an exegesis of his work and not Heideggerian readings of anyone else's, nor insults.
>>
This was literally my senior quote

Why would you need to explain such a simple, plain and obviously right statement? You must be really retarded to ask "what did he mean?"
