Psychological book where the father locks his son up and keeps him there for a long long time. I remember hearing about this, does something like it exist?

You might be thinking of City of Glass, first story in the New York Trilogy by Paul Auster. One hell of a book, OP, I definitely recommend it, especially if you like semi surreal stuff like David Lynch's mid- career work (Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, Lost Highway, etc).

>the father locks his son up and keeps him there for a long long time

It's only one scene, kind of early in the book, and not quite like you said. The family was having a dinner party, it was late so the father says "Marcel (the protagonist and narrator, who was around 6, I guess) should go to bed" Marcel says "ok, but mom has to come and tuck me in and kiss me goodnight" and the father replies "None of that, your mother will stay here with the guests".

So Marcel goes to bed alone (his room was indeed upstairs, and I think from his window he could see the dinner party out in the garden), and is yearning for his mother etc etc deep psychological insights etc etc.

Kafka's Letter to a Father or smth like that is pretty good. Very psychological, it explores a fucked up father-son relationship, where the father is always a looming, overbearing pressence. Sweet and short, def. recommended.

Check out "A Family Failure" by Renate Rasp.
Quite simply, it's the story of a boy whose abusive stepfather, Felix, and bitter, ineffectual mother try to turn him into a tree.
