I live in an area with tonnes of Chinese people but I don't know how worth it is to learn compared to Japanese considering I consume a great deal more Jap media.

Modern Chinese literature is no better than modern Japanese literature, so if you'd rather watch animu in its glorious original language, go Nip. But there's a fuckload more good Chink lit if you do want to dip into Classical autism.

Modern Chinese lit is garbage, aside from Congwen, classical Chinese lit is God tier though.
