To be fair, they wouldn't have been like that without the MFA. Writing in a voice that isn't part of your ethno-cultural-generational-geographical bubble is a big nono in academia, particularly if your specific bubble is the one described in OP. They were probably scolded and shamed when they tried to come up with original thoughts.

Literally almost everyone who has existed has done this to a certain extent though.
