I don't usually read books, what are some examples of good writing style?

Kill yourself

That's a bit like asking someone to post an example of an attractive woman.
It's easy to do, but there are many. To look at just one or two as an example would be stupid.
What's are your favorite books, OP?
>>
>>9427878
As I saw other books on this board i find it quite embarassing to post what i like. But who cares.
Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind
The Chronicles of Narnia
The Inheritance Cycle but i read those when i was underaged
>>
>>9427903
Well Narnia is alright,
Are you trying to get into reading more or what?
>>
>>9427860
why anon, you wanna be a writer?
>>
>>9427931
I wanna get mad pussy like John Green
>>
>>9427860
Are you asking in a roundabout way, what are /lit/'s recommended readings? Or are you looking for tips on how to start writing/improve your writing?
>>
>>9427922
Not really, just curious what /lit/ would answer me. I never understood what people mean by good writing style, so I asked over here. I never really liked reading that much although it can be enjoyable at times.

Start with the Greeks

"Vigorous writing is concise. A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts. This requires not that the writer make all his sentences short, or that he avoid all detail and treat his subjects only in outline, but that every word tell."
>>

>>9427938
I sure would like to improve my writing, but more for my own sake than writing something.
>>9427971
That works I guess?
>>
>>9427984
OP, if you're serious about improving your writing, you'll throw that quote from >>9427971 into Google and check out who said it. Then check what seminal book he wrote, and read it.

Well, usually, a good writing style is one that avoids cliches. You might think this sounds easy, but it's not. Also, sometimes something might seem like a cliche because it has been used to many times, like "Love conquers all" but when this was first used (by Virgil in 1st century BC) it wasn't a cliche and also, in context, it actually meant that love was so great that we should just surrender to it because we will lose if we fight it. It wasn't a love vs hate thing, it was a love vs us thing, and love (Amor) wasn't just an abstract concept, but a ancient deity, a wicked little God.
People may argue this as there are many "acknowledged" writers that write in cliches, like J.K.Rowling; her stories are good, but her writing style isn't. And that's not because she writes for children, there are many children's writer who aren't like this. I think that is underestimating children's abilities.
However, having said all this, if you avoid cliches just to sound deep and smart, without any real substance, it's gonna show. The best of literature cares both about what it has to say, and the way it is saying it.
Hope this helps.
