I just finished Frost by Bernhard today and while I liked it, I don't really know what to make of it as a whole other than the sense of desolation, provincial decay, and creeping insanity of the whole thing.

It's a long didactic bildungsroman told from the perspective of somebody living in the American South of the early 1900's. Not much to get. It's clearly in the style of Joyce's Portrait of the Artist, but I liked Look Homeward, Angel more, for whatever reason. If you're American and like Moby Dick and Whitman it'll push your buttons.
