Youll often hear hipsters who want to seem like they know about books claim that Stephen Dedalus from Ulysses is the best character in all of fiction
>>9418657
Stephen Dedalus isnt even the main character of Ulysses though, and his character is of little consequence in the novel, instead being fleshed out in Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. In Ulysses he mostly serves as a youthful foil to Bloom, and only in the final chapters. Plus, Joyce makes it pretty clear that Dedalus and Bloom's philosophical discussions are horseshit. The only real depth to Dedalus is due to Joyce making it clear that his depth is superficial. It's a good book, but he is definitely not supposed to be a good character in it, unless your metric is based on how realistic a depiction of a 20-something dude who is into philosophy is.
It's obviously Emma Woodhouse, but male brainlets get triggered by this

I unironically had a good chuckle at that one. Props, my man.

>his depth is superficial
You know it isn't though. He is genuine, authentic, rejecting of the norm, the easy, the path well tread. He, instead of shrugging his burden, picks it up, and carries it, and continues to carry it. When it seems like there is no point to furthering his mission, he continues. He persists. It is this very virtue that gives him the character so many people seek to destroy. He recognizes his past failings and refuses to let his future be defined by it.
>>9418867
Can you defend that characterization without referring to Portrait? People bringing him up in the context of Ulysses wouldn't be doing so to talk about his character in Portrait, that wouldn't make any sense.

Even if god was fictional, He would still be an omnipotent being, which means he would be able to will himself into existence if He were so inclined.Hence, god is real

>I have great love for those characters as they were to me when I was a 13-year-old boy. They were brilliantly designed and created characters. But they were for 50 years ago. I think this century needs, deserves, its own culture. It deserves artists that are actually going to attempt to say things that are relevant to the times we are actually living in. That’s a longwinded way of me saying I am really, really sick of Batman.
>>9418927
I cannot defend it unless you attack it first. My point stands. He isn't the slightest superficial.
>>9418867
Actually have to agree with anon, here. Ties in nicely with Portrait. Accurate.

the tyranny a select number of pop culture franchises hold over human consciousness should be as alarming to us, perhaps more, than are the monopolies on communications, banking and natural resources. Batman, Harry Potter and Star Wars are the myths of post industrial society, just as the Iliad was to the greeks or the Mahabarata to the Hindus. People need Myths to orient themselves within the world. Our myths are poor in content, devoid of poetry, they pale in comparison those of earlier civilisations. Our myths unchanging and under the rigid control of capital and the provisions of international copyright treaties.
