balsac is a beast, lit would love lost illusions, it's about wannabe writers and assorted other provincial bumkins trying to be bourgeois in the big city

Well I haven't read a ton of Balsac but from what I remember, he was really into physiognomy. That's why there is so many description in his works.
I think I main goal was to create an accurate description of society in his time, what he called La Comédie Humaine. This is a (long) series of novels, each focusing on a character, or a group of characters, with a particular place in society. And to illustrate that he was really creating a "universe", you can often see characters from a first novel make an apparition in another one.

Also, it's a known factoid that he was paid by the word but I don't have any source on this.

Well, the first major scene in The Wild Asses Skin is some of the best writing I've seen but he drops off when he goes into pages of asinine descriptions of settings and rooms.
