>The Malazan Empire simmers with discontent, bled dry by interminable warfare, bitter infighting, and bloody confrontations. Even the imperial legions, long inured to the bloodshed, yearn for some respite. Yet Empress Laseen's rule remains absolute, enforced by her dread Claw assassins.

>For Sergeant Whiskeyjack and his squad of Bridgeburners, and for Tattersail, surviving cadre mage of the Second Legion, the aftermath of the siege of Pale should have been a time to mourn the many dead. But Darujhistan, last of the Free Cities of Genabackis, yet holds out. It is to this ancient citadel that Laseen turns her predatory gaze.

>But it would appear that the Empire is not alone in this great game. Sinister, shadowbound forces are gathering as the gods themselves prepare to play their hand....

Doesnt sound too far off. Im impressed

Want to start reading The Wheel of Time books.

Should I start with this or book 1?
>>
>>9388017
Book 1. Why would you even ask that? I have never even heard of a series where reading prequels first is a good idea.
>>
>>9387807
I get the same feeling sometimes. It's great hat there is so much coice these days, but it's quite hard to find the good options.
What I sometimes do is look up award winning books and start from there, for example: who won the nebalu awards. Those are mostly decent to good books imo.
>>
>>9388025
Well a prequal is what happens before the main story anon. So if everything in it is set before events of book 1 then it is logical to read it first.
>>
>>9388017
im starting with book 1, myself.

How does Blindsight compare with Journey to Arcturus? I've heard it's a pretty good philosophical-fiction book.
>>
>>9388748
>Blindsight compare with Journey to Arcturus
Blindsight is an actual story, with the author's insight into biology and evolution (Watts has a PhD in Zoology or some such thing) peppered throughout. I frankly think that it's a bit overhyped in these threads, but it's pretty good. It's certainly worlds better than A Voyage to Arcturus, which is a gnostic parable with only the barest sketch of a story.

Read Annihilation and then don't read the other two books in the Southern Reach trilogy (not because they're bad, they just don't add anything). Also, go read Veniss Underground and then come back and tell us how it is. It sounds real weird in a way that could break good or bad.

Seconding Snow Crash, a fun classic.

An example many (myself included) consider to be not good is Ready Player One. However if you withstand the cringe-y parts the book end up being quite fun. It also plays heavily and bluntly on old pop-culture nostalgia, which is probably the reason it's gotten an enviable movie deal.
It's a book people here don't usually recommend but it delivers on everything your post asks for, despite it's deficiencies.
>>

okay I will definitely have to read snow crash then. I really regret starting infinite jest because I have so many other books I want to read.

It's one of the best works of SF ever written. What makes it good, basically, is that the author built an insanely intricate Dying Earth setting and then has a character from that setting narrate his story in the first person. Basically everything in the story (i.e., that the character, Severian, talks about) generally has, at least: a "surface" meaning written on the page, and a "real" meaning in the sense of what's actually happening in this almost indescribably bizarre world. There's usually also a "higher" meaning resulting from the main character being manipulated by godlike nonhuman beings/angels, frequently with some sort of real-world religious significance.

None of the above is spelled out in an explicit way whatsoever within the story however. You sound like you might not speak English natively; you may want to get a little better before you tackle it.
>>
So do the Gorean books ever get smutty?

I read the first one expecting it to be "Robert E. Howard writes an 18+ John Carter fanfic" but I got the fanfic and not the 18+ and I'm fairly disappointed.

I have a slight preference for paper (mostly due to the feeling of progress I get when the read part of the book becomes thicker, and the unread thinner), but lately I've been mostly reading on my Cybook Odyssey, since importing books is too much of a hassle and translations are never as good as the original prose.

Anyways, whoever realized that an ebook reader should have BOTH a touchscreen and physical buttons was agenius. Amazon's "you either get buttons or a touchscreen" is utter retardation.
>>
>>9389352
>Amazon's "you either get buttons or a touchscreen" is utter retardation.

That's only for older Kindles and the paperwhite. The voyage and the oasis both have touchscreen and buttons even though they're quite expensive.
>>
>>9389159
Is a web-published capeshit book.

According to tvtropes it's about a girl nicknamed skitter who can control bugs and is really clever about how she uses it: making spiders sew her a bulletproof outfit, suffocating villains by filling their mouthes with centipedes, etc.
>>
>>9389306
Don't take my word for it, but a translation might not be a good choice either. People have been finding new hidden meanings in the book for decades, a translation is certainly missing things that the translator didn't notice. It's one of those books that you can read ten times, and discover new things every time.
>>
>>9389367
I'm not sure about this PagePress idea. What's most important to me about physical buttons is tactile feedback, whick is missing from the pressure-sensitive system used by the new Kindles. I'd have to hold one in my hands first to pass a verdict.
>>
>>9389219
Yeah, contemporary writers often lacks class.
>>
>>9388037
A New Spring would be incredibly dull because you have no idea why any of the characters are or why the story is bothering with them. It's only interesting after you know who they are and what they will do.

Jorge Luis Borges may be what you're looking for, an Argentine author of short stories from the early-mid 20th century who depicted worlds of oblique logic, unfathomable infinities, labyrinthine and illusory realities, double identities, cabalist logic, obscure allusion and intertextuality.

For example, there is a story about a lottery in Babylonia, where tickets begin as monetary rewards, but this becomes mundane, so there is a change to arbitrary non-monetary rewards and then punishments. The lottery operators become a clandestine and omnipotent company, so that all good and bad acts, even ones of a highly personal and subtle nature, could potentially come from the lottery; and there is a question if it even exists. In another story, people inhabit a library composed of an infinite number of hexagonal rooms, containing books with every permutation of words in an alphaber; the books are overwhelmingly gibberish so that men are driven to suicide in their life-long search for books that make sense. Then there are stories of golems, dream projections, summaries of fictitious enyclopedia entries about fictitious worlds, or fictitious books.

Borges likes to play with metaphysics, ideas of infinity, time, space, chaos and order. But he is also a fantasist and speculative writer, who will appeal to those who are intrigued by the metaphysical aspects of Poe, Lovecraft, Philip K Dick, Gene Wolfe, Jack Vance, or any science fiction that likes to write about the bending of time, reality, and space. So I recommend SFFG look at his 'Labyrinths' volume of short stories pulled from several of his collections.

Lord Dunsay - King of Elflands Daughter
E.R. Eddison - The Worm Ouroboros
Evangeline Walton - The Mabinogion (she wrote the first book at this time but nobody knew what to make of it so she dropped out of sight until the 1970s when L. Sprague de Camp was put in charge of Balatines Adult Fantasy line and got it reprinted and it had enormous success and she finally got to finish the work nearly 40 years later)
Robert E. Howard - Conan the Barbarian
Fritz Leiber - Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, Conjure Wife (the first contemporary 'urban' fantasy), Our Lady of Darkness
C.L. Moore - Jirel of Joiry (the first female protagonist)
Jack Williamson - Darker Than You Think
Jack Vance - The Dying Earth, Lyonesse if you want a later work too
Poul Anderson - The Broken Sword, Three Hearts and Three Lions
Michael Moorcock - Elric
Ursula K. LeGuin - Earthsea
Roger Zelazy - Chronicles of Amber
Votan - John James
M. John Harrison - Viriconium
That brings us to the end of 60s/start of the 70s

The Well of the Unicorn by Fletcher Pratt - its shit.
Lord Darcy by Randall Garrett - its shit.
Lud in the Mist by Hope Mirrlees - haven't found a copy can't comment.

I'm trying to find a teen fantasy novel series I read as a kid.

From what I can remember each story followed a different character separated by worlds. Up in some magical (?) mountains were a network of caves that contained portals to different worlds. Each of the worlds I think had magic and were somewhat unpleasant.

They would have been published in the early 2000s.

I remember one story featured a slave.

Not a lot to go on. The story was probably shit anyway.
>>

I don't think they're particularly different, I wouldn't bother

(However, the publisher is having a bit of a gamble to have those books translated, they wouldn't have translated novels 4 and onwards if the first three wouldn't have sold enough, so buying these books supports that IMHO brave decision)

Who is your favourite novelist of all time?
>I’m afraid I can’t possibly pick just one favourite novelist of all time, but here is a random selection of five: Irène Némirovsky, Roberto Bolano, Colm Tóibín, David Mitchell, and Tove Jansson.

What is your favourite comfort read?
>Anything by P.G. Wodehouse. There is no scenario in which reading about Jeeves won’t make me feel better.

What is the last book you read that made you laugh?
>Ann Patchett’s recent essay collection, This is the Story of a Happy Marriage.

What is the last book you read that made you cry?
>Julian Barnes’s Levels of Life.

If you could require the leader of your country to read one book, what would it be?
>Random Family, by Adrian Nicole LeBlanc. I think that book is essential to anyone seeking to better understand urban poverty in the United States.

What is your favourite sentence from any book ever?
>From Wuthering Heights:
>“I have dreamt in my life dreams that have stayed with me ever after, and changed my ideas: they’ve gone through and through me, like wine through water, and altered the colour of my mind.”

Honestly I blame >>9391976 for this, all the literary departments suddenly thinking they were new and revelatory and paradigm shifting for reading this back in the 80s
>>
>>9391980
>She's one of those literati people who think they can just waltz into sf and try to write it without knowing the first thing about it
While that's certainly true, there's nothing to prevent someone like that from writing an interesting piece of sf or fantasy (Ishiguro, for instance). Emily St. John Mandel's problem is that, when you strip away all the genre trappings, she's a boring writer.

Anyone here a fan of Ted Chiang? His short stories all range from good to amazing when it comes to themes and ideas; too bad he's rather weak at character voices.

Some books are so deliberately baroque or individual that they were out of place even in their own time. They never partook in their contemporary trend or fashion;and so Lovecraft, Vance, Lafferty, Wolfe read much the same as they did now, as then. In this way, they don't date as much as mediocre books that were written to fit the current vogue, e.g. New Wave science fiction books, 70's fantasy, 80's cyberpunk copycats. It is these unimpressive works, written to sell within the shape of their contemporary market, that will be lost to history. By this logic, one can surmise that much of todays fiction that written to an 'inclusive' and politically written spec will be unread after a few years.

If the overlord light novels were written in a western style without the anime shit, they would be so much better. Also, the side arcs are dogshit. I'm still hyped for the next volume this august though. How are you liking it?

Come on, son. No one has ever been able to capture the fire and passion he poured into his writing. Everything else is correct. The "grimdark" fad is already dying and the PC shit is definitely on its way out.

Robert Howard is an interesting case, so I didn't list him alongside the rest. To me, he feels surprisingly dynamic and current. Lovecraft and co were always apart from their contemporary trends because of their more baroque and slower storytelling. Howard, to me, has always felt like a dynamic and relevant author - an American GI could read Howard in the forties, just like a plumber could read him today.

Dying Earth was Vance's first published work. It's not representative of his developed style.

The Gray Prince is known to be mediocre. Vance was writing for nearly 50 years, just admit you haven't read his best works or even a representative sample.

Do you seriously think there are a bunch of fifty and sixty year-olds hanging out on /lit/? Hint: there aren't. And that site is the most pro-"dinosaur" thing you can cite, his list of absolute top authors includes Tolkien and Vance and Peake, but also even older writers like Dunsany, Eddison, and Baum that get don't really get discussed here.

I read PKD's Ubik. I thought it was alright, a middling read about his pet themes (but mostly of decay, in an uncertain realm) and I was glad to read one of his more well regarded books so that I could have an opinion on it.

I thought it wasn't as charming as DADOES, Dr Bloodmoney, and Martian Time Slip. I think this is because I had figured out the plot early on, and also due to there being too many unremarkable minor characters in ridiculous clothes who serve little purpose, and go beyond merely adding local colour and quirkiness, to feeling like aberrant and unnecessary distractions. He handled many characters a lot better in his earlier Dr Bloodmoney, where the townsfolk are more fleshed out, with a sense of their lives outside of the plot - but in this book there are at least eight cardboard characters in peculiar clothes who are difficult to distinguish and who just take up space before dying.

However, this book is at least as good a treatment of blurred realities as The Three Stigmata Of Palmer Eldritch, more lucid, and the overall thing is redeemed by its many typical PKD moments, and its fast readability. Overall I would say this deserves three Dicks out of five.

/sffg/ I am officially weirded the fuck out. I was looking for an obscure story in the arabian nights that I've wanted to read for almost a year now and found a modern adaptation coming out in november.

I read the description and amazon described it as a mix of literally my two favorite books (neither of which are especially popular). I'm convinced that there must be some kind of targeted marketing system that's filling in blanks with my most searched books, but when I inspected the html there was no obvious sign it was templated, and even when I sign out the description remains. It's weirding me the fuck out

I know I'm being paranoid. it's just a really freaky coincidence that I'm finding such a perfect fit when there are only so many books I like
>>
>>9395308
The flaws frustrate me. If we accept that Androids is his best book and a five, which I do, then Ubik is at least a level below it. Yes, it ticks a lot of boxes of what we expect from him; illusory realities, double identities, decay and regeneration, wry observations of future capitalism, religious subtexts. My main problem is it's meandering pace in parts, with a few too many thin characters, and an antagonist(s) who is too passive. This could have been an equal of Androids, which is a profound book that transcends the medium, but instead Ubik's just good entertainment.

Comedy is hard to recommend because humor is so subjective.

I'd suggest Keith Laumer's Retief series. Two fisted diplomacy.
http://baencd.freedoors.org/Books/Retief/Retief.htm

Harry Harrison's Stainless Steel Rat gets recommended a lot but I personally don't like his style.

Terry Pratchett's first two books, Dark Side of the Sun and Strata, were scifi.

Some of Scalzi's short stories tend to the more humorous side IIRC, Redshirts is a big satire on Star Trek.

A more recent book is Mechanical Failure by Joe Zieja, which I thought really has some great Spaceballs-esque moments.
