There's a lot that the first book did right to captivate children. It's not that easy. The rest of the books might have gotten progressively worse as the author started thinking of herself as some sort of edgy genius, but the first is a master piece of children's books.

No, they get progressively better leading up to and including the fourth book, then go downhill afterwards. Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkaban, and Goblet of Fire are the masterpieces of children's books. Philosopher's Stone is the most forgettable and boring of the seven books.
