No. My favorite writer is Thomas Wolfe (Look Howeward, Angel) and my favorite poet is Robert Frost. I know that they're not the greatest of all time. The greatest authors are guys like Cervantes, Dostoeyevsky, Melville. Greatest poets are Milton, Dante, Baudelaire. Guys like that. Philosophers are Plato and Nietzche. Somebody in the thread mentioned Chateaubriand, who I love and hold up as a great French Romantic, but he's minor compared to guys like Hugo and Walter Scott. But I like Chateaubriand more personally. It's a weird thread and the answers are predictable, unless you're referring to favorites, with a good reason.

I think our answers shouldn't strive to name our most favourite authors, but, as objectively as possible, the better ones.
Finding the greatest philosopher is easy ; it is Plato, without any argument possible. The novelty, greatness and profundity of his thought quite exceeds anything thought before ; and his unimaginable influence sets him apart from the rest of the philosophers.

Non-philosophical prose is, perhaps, the true domain of the Western Civilization, more so than that of Antiquity ; I don't see many prose stylists in Antiquity who reach the levels attained by Western men ; perhaps Sallust and Tacitus, amongst the Romans, could compete with our greatest ; as to the Greeks, Thucydides has a great, river-like sentence, its breath and breadth never exceeding or falling short of his idea ; but let us consider a sentence, a period like that of Bossuet for French, or Browne, for English ; has Antiquity produced better ? I'm not sure. Now let us take a man like Rousseau ; no matter how repulsive his ideas, how great, pure and breathing the breath of mountain tops, his sentence ! Take a look at this one, taken from his Discourse on the Arts and Sciences :

The thought is as elevated as the style ; the sentence runs, from wide and harmonious, to short and resonant, like a sudden chord played by the entire orchestra to abruptly end the development of a melody, followed by silence. One can only imagine the sound of these words echoing in the vast walls of a Church, before the audience, the grieving family.

I would, as to prose, probably, indeed, go with Bossuet. But there's Joyce. As to Joyce, I think his works are too unequal ; the genius alternates with lower passages ; and is this not the case, for all novelists ? Can a novel always fly at the highest possible levels of thought and style ; or does it not have to, from time to time, spell out the terrible sentence : "and he walked out the door" ? The novel indeed, alternates between mediocre passages and soars unparalleled in other forms of prose ; but is this not exactly due to the other less interesting parts, which, so to speak, form the ground from which the novelist, here and there, may rest his foot as to rise to levels unbeknownst to other prose writers ? A novel is a chimera ; the head of a beautiful woman, with the legs of a snake and the torso of a fish ; but sometimes, the wings of a dove and the voice of a swan.
