If you want to read something by Joyce "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" is a good start. It's much easier to appreciate than Ulysses and a great book.

I love "For God, Country and Coca-Cola" by Mark Pendergrast.

Not being able to appreciate the quality of the book regardless of one's taste reveals more about the reader than the work itself.

The first chapter is easy and pretty interesting, but I guess it isn't for everyone.
