I tried reading this crumby book, and all. Boy, is the prose stilted and annoying. Salinger really likes to shoot the bull, you know? I couldn't even finish it, I admit.
Anyone who says this belongs among the classics is just being a phony, if you really want to know the truth.

Don't worry OP, I get it
Why are there like two threads of this on /lit/ right now?
Anyways I personally found it pretty charming to have a character I could relate to as much as I could Holden Caulfield back in high school and loved the more realistic language of teenagers of the time. I remember reading that some people thought that Holden wasn't relatable to people because his family was so rich. I can see where they're coming from. I have a problem with stories where the main character suddenly becomes super rich just so we can focus on their love life or something. I find it insulting how much money is trivilized by these stories when it seriously us life or death. But honestly the story would have worked just as much if he was poorer kid or middle class kid who had to carry the guilt of getting into college due to nepotism or connections or something.

Comparing pornography to literature is quite the stretch.
