My friend in the hospital needs something to read. It's also his birthday, and I'd like to celebrate it with something a little special. However, I don't want something too depressing. He doesn't read very much, so feel free to suggest something a little more basic if you want.
I was thinking something like Tortilla Flat would be good, at least as an example.

Good choice OP, Steinbeck is great for what you're looking for. I'd go with Cannery Row + Sweet Thursday or Travels with Charley though.

Any other authors that you would recommend though?

Has he read anything about King Arthur? Tortilla Flat is pretty funny but the entire thing is basically a parody of Arthurian legend and you'll miss a lot without knowing it.
I haven't read many funny literary books but my best recommendation is Don Quixote, one of Shakespeare's comedies, or The Importance of Being Earnest.

I wouldn't say I'm looking for a funny book, just not something completley bleak like Three Comrades or something. Maybe Robinson Crusoe?

The Little Prince
It's comfy, easy to read, humorous, bittersweet at times, and activates those almonds.
