You might be looking for an anthology, that way you can read seminal works in a structured way. I like Perry-- you can buy one of the older editions if you don't feel like forking up textbook $$.

Anon, you are doing fine. Having a general grasp on the basics of the evolution of philosophy helps a lot. Read those kinds of material, watch videos, discuss some with friends that enjoy that, and try to read some authors while doin research on them on the side.
