'yknow life is like a prolapsed anus: overlong and full of shit' is a perspective seldom found in academia but that doesn't make it one worth writing a novel about. especially when that novel is also like a prolapsed anus, in exactly the same way as life.

To the contrary. It is an entirely pedestrian book, stylistically closest to romance novels of the very lowest kind. One-dimensional characters, linear storyline without meaningful struggle, simplistic morality etc.

Rand herself was at most only interesting as a case study in megalomaniachal narcissism. Truth is that she was laughably inept in her grandiloquent attempts at philosophy, falling flat on her face at almost every turn. She's fundamentally wrong about the core items of her ideological programme, what rationalism means and how logic functions. This is well established, as you would if you actually cared about the issues that the book pretends to proselytize for.

And that cover is dogshit.

Well, for one thing, she radically misinterprets Aristotle. The whole 'A is A' business that she uses as axiom for her entire 'philosophy'? Well:

"The extraordinary virtues Miss Rand finds in the law that A is A suggests that she is unaware that logical principles by themselves can test only consistency. They cannot establish truth . . . . Swearing fidelity to Aristotle, Miss Rand claims to deduce not only matters of fact from logic but, with as little warrant, ethical rules and economic truths as well. As she understands them, the laws of logic license her in proclaiming that “existence exists,” which is very much like saying that the law of gravitation is heavy and the formula of sugar sweet."
