The name was Khazad-dûm and it was renamed Moria, which translates to "black pit", after the dwarf left because of the Balrog.
So... title.
because eagles. now shut up.
I don't remember the context but is it possible that whoever read the he inscription just translated it to Moria since thay was a more comon name?
Because tolkien is the god of plot holes.

"Ennyn Durin Aran Moria. Pedo Mellon a Minno. Im Narvi hain echant. Celebrimbor o Eregion teithant i thiw hin."
As Gandalf first translated it to the other Walkers:
"The Doors of Durin, Lord of Moria. Speak, friend, and enter. I, Narvi, made them. Celebrimbor of Hollin drew these signs."

celembrimbor can see the future idiot
I think the elves always called it Black Pit or Moria, even before it was lost.
It makes sense that the elves would always see it as such.

Maybe Celebrimbor was being a jerk and called kazad dum the black pit as a practical joke or because he actually hated the dwarves. The name just got wider use after the balrog showed up making black pit a more apt description. If that's not it I guess we'll have to fall back on red book of westmarch translation errors.
