The Road is unconventional, but I didn't think it was great. It's also a movie.

I had a professor who would say that much of Gogol's work was a dystopian vision for 19th century Russians, and that there's a firm undercurrent of godless horror beneath all the absurdity. I've always liked that interpretation.
