Do you think there will ever be a YA book that will be of literary merit AND is trendy/mainstream? Critics just say YA is bad and never thought provoking or whatever

As for the op q: no. We may see "good" books in excess of want, but for a book to be great, it mustn't heed to everyone.
There's bad books that aren't YA either, it's just that YA seeks to soothe readers with the lie that they're the only type of fiction that can appeal to someone who has trouble coping with the impending responsibilities of adulthood. Their characters often don't grow up encouraging stagnation in the reader. Compare to literary fiction where a protagonist is rarely without major character flaws and yet they still have to move through the adult world instead of some sci fantasy high school bull shit
