video game translators have so much more freedom

Shit bait but why should they not be strict? I remember finding a book in my native language which was a translation from french which was a translation from chinese.

look at pic related
i dont mean this as bait
its just interesting that video game translators arent nearly as scrupulous as book translators - pic related is apparently just SOP in video games.
is there an example of anything like this in the book world?

even if i grant that, i would think that a translator is a translator - as soon as you take on the role of translation, the issues become obvious: authorial intent v. comprehensibility, etc. and the idea of adding your own political commentary to the script seems obviously like the wrong thing to do. obviously the translator simply thought "this is for americans, americans will think this is funny" and its that attitude about translation that's interesting to me because i never see it with books.
