What the fuck was up with these filthy perverted Greeks? They hate women, they're never full of fucking, and they're all gay!

Is THIS really the foundation of Western Culture?

>gay
>hate women
>judging an ancient culture by today's standards

Anyway, Sappho is objectively the best lyric poet.

Not my favourite translation:

That man to me seems equal to the gods,

the man who sits opposite you

and close by listens

to your sweet voice
5 and your enticing laughter—

that indeed has stirred up the heart in my breast.

For whenever I look at you even briefly

I can no longer say a single thing,
but my tongue is frozen in silence;

10 instantly a delicate flame runs beneath my skin;

with my eyes I see nothing;

my ears make a whirring noise.
A cold sweat covers me,

trembling seizes my body,

15 and I am greener than grass.

Lacking but little of death do I seem.

Wow, I'd never read that poem by Semonides before. Shit was hilarious, thanks

>They hate women, they're never full of fucking, and they're all gay!
which is also an astute observation of the west in twenny sebemteen, so i think it's a little silly to ask how they could be its foundation

>the lyric poets being the basis of our knowledge of Greek culture and practically worshipped by the Greeks for centuries
This is wrong, retard. Why would you even make a comment like that if you just admitted to having only begun with the Greeks? Why would you think you have any grasp of what the Greeks were about? And literally why the fuck did you start with lyric poetry?

Greek lyric poetry is the basis of our knowledge of Greek SOCIAL culture for the relatively LIMITED and comparatively "unenlightened" pre-classical era, and was all but entirely swept aside as a cultural force by the tragedians (who were themselves considered poets). And lyric poets were almost never "worshipped," except for maybe Sappho getting a few mentions now and then. No lyric poetry held a candle to Homer's influence.

That is indeed a terrible translation

Woah you're a smart dude. You BTFOd me.

There's no denying their place in Greek culture. They were constantly sung at festivals and events.

Thanks for keeping us informed, guy who just started with the Greeks.

Greeks are the true red pill.

They made a mockery of a society ran by women(pretty prophetic) and made it women who unleashed all of the evils in the world from pandora's box and she kept hope.

The page for Assemblywomen has been vandalized by leftists calling 2000 year old works of human heritage trash but I've found it for posterity.

To be fair, unlike the Biblical fall from grace which stems from Eve's eating the forbidden fruit, Pandora was only sent in response to Prometheus (titan, but male) giving fire to man.

But yeah the Greeks typically despised the status of women in family and society.
