IRC was one of the original ways of being social on the net. you connect to a server and then from there you can log into chat rooms called channels and talk to the others in the same channel. you can have multiple channels open at once. you can also private message people from the channel or from your friends list. you could also send files to other people through it. thats where piracy (warez) comes in. certain channels would be dedicated to serving certain types of files such as movies, music, games, apps, books or porn. irc was software that could have addon custom software, such as automated serving/sharing files software. this allowed a person to setup a chat bot that people could type commands to in order to request a file that was advertised in the channel. the request could type a command such as: *nickname-of-pirate* xdcc jurassicpark.pdf. you would then get the file or you would have to wait in line if the max uploads from the pirate were taken.
