As someone who has witnessed the extremely powerful emotional distraught and despair that a miscarriage brings, it's definitely not something to joke about. The fact that Austen didn't feel so much as a pang of sorrow, but rather joke about it, is somewhat shocking. Even a sociopath would feign sadness and sympathy at such a tragic event. My honest guess is that Austen never fully developed emotionally or mentally and was stuck in a sort of twisted fantasy world that centered entirely around her. Only someone completely self absorbed could be so insensitive to the suffering of others.
