Something else to add is that travel is as safe as you want it to be. The only way to add danger is to stray away from the native-proof areas and attempt to find an authentic experience. This is of course a natural human tendency, many people have examined and wrote about why we love to explore the unknown. Read "A Distant Episode" by Paul Bowles to understand what I'm talking about.
