Can I get recommendations on French short stories? I would prefer stories with simple syntax and diction, as I am still getting the hang of French.

Yeah you can try Maupassan or Voltairet. If you rather stick to 20th century, I love Marcel Aymé, try the short stories collected in "the passer-through-walls", they're slightly fantastic and weird but with a very pure prose and a realistic background.

I only just thought about it - why not Planet of the Apes ? It's a decently short novel, with quite a simple syntax if I remember. The kind of stuff that kids can read whren they're 15 or so. Yet thre guy's a good writer , and obviously the story is part of common culture now.
