Can a native English speaker become an effective author in Spanish? Are there any examples of English writers learning Spanish and becoming authors in both languages?
Beckett wrote quite a bit in french and Dinesen in english, so becoming famous on a second language is possible. Specifically spanish I wouldn't know, but french is harder either way.

There have been some bilingual authors that are actually good in both languages, see Nabokov or Kundera for example. However, that's very rare, and I don't understand why you would want to write in spanish, culturally speaking, english language got the hegemony in today's world, on top of that, sure you could become an ok spanish writer (maybe some YA trasher), but you would pale compared to the great ones.

I just briefly skimmed his wiki page. Do you know if he learned French as an adult?

The only thing with Nabokov is that he learned multiple languages as a child. Any authors that learned languages as an adult? Also, I want to learn Spanish because
1) I'm Puerto Rican but I don't know Spanish, kinda lame
2) I think it's useful to have a second language under my belt, especially in the US. And Spanish is the obvious choice for me.

There's no problem at all with learning spanish (especially if you live in the US), what I see unnecessary is that you want to become a writer in a language you don't even possess.
Dunno if there's an exception (most likely there must be, but prolly a mediocre one), but I'm pretty sure almost all bilingual writers (that are good) did learn their second laguage when theye were young.
Also is kinda strange that you don't know any spanish being a Puerto Rican, never been around your parents or hanging out with other latinos?

No in medieval /lit/. Read more.

I'm not sure about writing purely in Spanish, I was thinking writing like Nabokov does; English laced with French in parts. Also I live with my adoptive family, which is why I never learned Spanish.

Writing something entirely in Spanish would be the end goal tho
