How does /lit/ feel about italics? Is it unique only to the English language, or do other languages use italics, too? How important is it to literature?

they have their place, although some people tend to over-use them. Frank Herbert, i'm looking at you.
Always feels pretentious and unnecessary.
If you have so little confidence in your writing to start decorating it with bells and whistles, you probably are a shitty writer.

They're not strictly necessary, but can be a helpful tool. I like to have a character's thoughts italicized, because it's always a bit awkward when the text suddenly jumps to first person present tense without warning.

Not needed, but they can be useful. I prefer to keep them limited to object/building names but they can also be useful for indicating a character's thoughts, assuming you don't go overboard.

They're completely fine if you want to highlight a word. Just don't abuse them :)
