What is the benefit of memorizing great lines of poetry and great passages of literature? What have you memorized yourself?
Щe cи oтидa oт cвeтa -
тъй кaктo cъм дoшъл, бeздoмeн
cпoкoeн кaтo пeceнтa,
нaвявaщa нeнyжeн cпoмeн
JAH MAJEH и мoј Cpeм,
Пapиc, мoји мpтви дpyгoви, тpeшњe y Кини
Mи ce пpивиђaјy јoш дoк oвдe ћyтим, бдим, и мpeм,
И лeжим, хлaдaн, кao нa пeпeлy клaдa.
Caмo тo вишe ниcмo ми љyди, вeћ нeки пoлипи, дeлфини,
Штo ce тyмбaјy и јeздe и ypличy: "Пpaх, пeпeo, cмpт јe тo!"
A вичy и pycкo "ничeвo"!
И шпaнcкo "nada".

Acostuma-te à lama que te espera!
O Homem, que, nesta terra miserável,
Mora, entre feras, sente inevitável
Necessidade de também ser fera.
no benefit, unless you're able to apply them to your life in some way
I essentially only memorize bible verses, as a Christian.
That iridule- when beautiful and strange
In a bright sky above a mountain range
One opal cloudlet in an oval form
Reflects the rainbow of a thunderstorm
Which in a distant valley has been staged
For we are all most artistically caged

Surely, other works of literature can be applied to your life?

yeah of course but generally I don't see any other reason why one would memorize lines from the illiad or some shit unless it was for school
I can think of three reasons to memorize pieces of literature.
One is for beauty. As one man who lived in a house built by Frank Lloyd Wright said, I haven't had a single day where I haven't been surrounded by beauty. Yet people do not memorize great paintings or works of visual art, only surround themselves in them - so why not surround yourself with great works, more than you could commit to memory?
The second is for self improvement through application to one's life. Surely though, the principles of thought illustrated in words can be applied to our lives, but not the exact text.
The third is contemplation of meaning. Although, one could think that instead of using time to memorize the verse, someone could rather read it over and over and memorize incidentally.
Still, I am drawn to memorizing great passages.

The Illiad is not a great moral or ethical work. It is poetic.

thats my point.
Noćas se moje čelo žari,
Noćas se moje vjeđe pote;
I moje misli san ozari,
Umrijet ću noćas od ljepote.
Duša je strasna u dubini,
Ona je zublja u dnu noći;
Plačimo, plačimo u tišini,
Umrimo, umrimo u samoći.
