I just write as a hobby but out of nowhere a person I know gave me 3 short histories to read. I never wrote a literary criticism before and I have no idea how to start. Read the Varieties of Criticism article on Wikipedia and I plan trying to explain what I liked/dislike on the histories. I know shit about literary theory so I can't do much.
Now I ask you /lit/, any tips on how to proceed and make my review minimaly useful for the author?

if someone gives you something to read, that means they want you to read it. not critique it. you don't even need to know literary theory to explain why you did or didn't like it.
when you say "three short histories", was that autocorrect for "three short stories"? if it was, then tell your friend that giving someone a short story and asking for a critique is like blowing a load of semen in their face and asking them how salty it tasted.

I find myself having the same problem, it seems that no matter how much I read, I'm usually unable to find anything to critquice or analyze in the books I read.
It could just be that im too complacent but having my opinion boil down to "I enjoyed it" and "I didnt enjoy it" makes me feel quite idiotic.
