I want to one day write cool fantasy novelsbut every single time I think of a story to write it just feels horribly cringy edgy anime shit that I just stop writing. How do I overcome this? It seems like learning how to draw is forgivable and even mediocre drawings are well liked on the internet unless it's pregnant porn of Sonic characters on deviantart. With learning to write it's different where any novice level creative writing is always seen to be cringy and "fanfic tier" whether it's an actual fanfic or not. My perception is probably warped from seeing so many people on 4chins post "look at this cringy fanfic I found" but it discourages me from writing more in fear of anything I write becoming memeworthy.

So what do you do? Do I continue writing what I feel is just shitty cringe inducing anime shit until it isn't? If Shakespear were born today would he start out by writing an Overwatch smut or Woody Got Wood? What were you guys writing on your own at first before you got better? I feel like this is a specific question because I don't necessarily mean "how do I git gud" but "how do I stop being cringy"

Try the redpill, kid
>>
Stop consuming shitty media. You wouldn't write anime shit if you didn't watch anime
>>
Anon, just read good literature and keep writing. Eventually if you read enough good shit, and write enough, you'll git gud. It's that simple.

Or if not good, you'll at least be better than what you are right now.

I don't think that's actually going to help. I can't undo the past.

What red pill?

Here is something I found legitimately helps:

For every piece of pulpy entertainment book (fantasty, japanese light novels), read three or four classics of literature. And read their reviews/interpretations.
For every concept, setting, society or theme you have for a fantasy book or media (ie Elder Scrolls or Gloranthia), read fantasy books that do similar, and read scholarly analysis of them if they're available.
Read up on religions, read up on history, cultures, read up on philosophy. Hell, if you understand mathematics to a degree that it could be incorporated into your pseudo-universe, utilize it.

Fantasy is a lot more than world building. It's creating a spirit of it's own, that the reader delves into when reading such a book. It has to be literature in its own right it will fail as good fantasy.

This. Or just find a niche market that will buy whatever comes out your bowels.

Write a futuristic war story from the pov of an engineer aboard a space vessel. Have him survive countless horrors only to watch all human civilization eradicated. Only then can your engineer die, painfully, by his own hand and madness

This guy definitely has the right idea. If you discover an author you really like, try to winnow down what you like about that author's work and replicate it in your own writing. Also highly recommend reading across a wide variety of genres. You'll quickly get a handle on what works and what doesn't (for you/what you're trying to do). Best of luck, anon. Don't give up.

You have to be well rounded if you want to be a good author. If you feel your stuff is to much one way, it probably reflects your limited reference pool.

This anon has a good idea.
I'd add historical documents to his suggestions as well. You can find a bunch of diaries and journals and just old books on all sorts of topics that are now public domain and free to download.

I'd recommend especially reading biographies and autobiographies.

This. I read a lot of historical texts. Now I love fantasy, but I rarely read it because most of it is unfortunately shit. However, taking it from the perspective of almost some sort of loosely based historical fiction where you change a lot of things is usually good.

Curses, magic, maybe materials that are similar to real ones but slightly different are all good. People believed in things like this back then, so coming at it from that perspective is good imo.

I just instantly drop a book if it gets to some badass character and they're drop kicking people off horses and having them fly back 10 ft or something absurd. Who wants to read that shit?

Having magic everywhere but affecting things in small ways is fine. Having it to such an absurd degree for some 'chosen' characters where you can bullshit anything you want because muh magic, is cringey and terrible.

>It has to be literature in its own right [or] it will fail as good fantasy

pretty much the biggest factor
