Is the dark tower series worth reading? Just looking for something

Not unless you're already a big fan of Stephen King. Doing a whole series just amplifies all of his faults. It's overlong, the plot either goes nowhere or goes into some really silly stupid shit, and then the ending sucks because he never plans out his plots and just makes them up as he goes. It may start out promising with a unique and interesting world, but it falls apart pretty quickly. If you want a nice fantasy saga to read, there are many many other series to chose from.

No it is not worth reading. The later books are bad enough that even if you do enjoy the series at first you will only end up being disappointed later.

This. Originally he just wrote a book whenever he felt inspired to do so, but after almost dying he decided to barrel through the last three, which sort of blur into each other and overall feel less inspired.

It's disappointing because the first four are basically just setup for the rest of the story. The first book is written in a totally different style, the members of the "Ka-Tet" aren't even all together until the middle of book three, and book four is mostly a big unnecessary flashback. And then it goes off the rails in book six with this demon baby subplot that doesn't even go anywhere because it turns out not to be any kind of threat, and in the last third of book seven the characters are just wandering through a forest and have a couple run-ins with unremarkable monsters on their way to the Tower.

I didn't even mind the very end except for the fact that King spins a whole spiel about how "lol you readers just want a cool ending when it's the journey that counts, turn back now if you don't want to be disappointed :)" and undermined what artistic integrity I felt he had. Also Susanna is a cunt for leaving Roland behind. Oy was a good boy.

In spite of this, I feel a sudden desire to read them again. It does have a certain charm, at least for a while. Maybe I just read it at the right time.

The quality drops badly as the books go on as others have said, still well worth a read for the good parts though. Roland is a great character.
