So I've decided to read the Bible for the first time, but I'm having a lot of trouble understanding it. I'm not really concerned with the "meaning" I'm meant to get out of it, I just have trouble following what is supposed to be going on. I'm admittedly not very smart, but I felt it's important to have actually read the Bible.

Get a translation for dummies and ESLs like the Good News one.

Get a copy that has commentaries like the Didache Bible or the Navarre Bible or the Oxford Catholic Study Bible. In the Didache Bible (I have one) for instance gives a outline on the books like which ones are historic, poetic, prophetical, etc.
Try to follow a study or reading guide rather than blast through cover to cover, especially if you've not read it before, aren't Christian etc. The Bible is really a collection of books in many genres, from personal testimony to poetry to genealogical and national history, to theology etc and the more you think of it as such, and approach it as something with spread out connections and themes, the more you'll get out of it.
