"- He's not too bad, Nosey Flynn said, snuffling it up. He has been known to put his hand down too to help a fellow. Give the devil his due. O, Bloom has his good points. But there's one thing he'll never do.
His hand scrawled a dry pen signature beside his grog.
- I know, Davy Byrne said.
Nothing in black and white, Nosey Flynn said.", Ulysses, p. 159
I don't get it, what are they talking about? What is the nevergiven signature for? Lending money?

Put things in obvious and plain terms with an obvious good and bad side he'll argue both sides of an issue? I haven't read it yet but that's what I glean from that passage
Only 135 iq+ readers understand that passage

CUTE!
>tfw she will never be my gf
jdimsa ;_;
Bloom's power level makes a regular bipolar neurotic like me seem like a normie
Not really related to the thread, just wanted to show my respect

Bloom gets a lot of shit for being Jewish and (allegedly) a Freemason. I remember later in the book someone says that his name isn't even really Bloom, but a Hungarian name his he had changed. So he might be referring to that when he makes a signature, that he'll never use his "real" name.

>He has been known to put his hand down too to help a fellow
>Nothing in black and white
these lines seem to imply that Bloom is willing to help people but he will only do it "off the books" so to speak

What does that mean?
>>9122949
basically means no formal finances or records involved
I think in this context its more specifically meant to imply Bloom doesn't want his name attached to his deeds
