hmm, what makes you imply that cyberpunk is necessarily 'nerd-core'? i get that much of it is, but i don't really see how authors like dick or burroughs fit what op is looking for, even though i adore them.

it gets a lot of hate here, but i read it recently and i liked it enough, just found it at times a bit too, overwrought in its pulpiness, i guess. generally liked the style though, and it dealt with some really neat concepts.
How about sci-fi that's more about character development and story than sic-fi ideas, like Hyperion but unlike OP's pic?
