What are your thoughts on The Fall by Albert Camus?

Here are some resources on it I would like to share with you:

- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQCsSuj3LgA (rare BBC documentary)

- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYuEwEhOzRs (a lecture about The Plague and The Fall. He starts talking about The Fall about halfway through.)

One of my favorite all time books, I love Camus and this to me is his best work. As Sartre says, this book is also the least understood. I can personally attest to this. Ive read it twice and i feel i will read it at least two more times, and take more notes.

In general i feel The Fall puts forward the root of existentialism: namely, one must accept responsibility for ones actions. I know Camus hated the term existentialism and did not want to be associated with it, but he captures the responsibility notion of existentialism perfectly in this work.

The book also makes many sly proclamations that in themselves could encompass whole books. For example: Clamence mentions at some point that (im paraphrasing) "all people do in Europe is ideas and fornication". Clamence constantly contradicts himself- the way he contradicts himself so much, even in a single paragraph, reminds me of the Underground Man. We find Clamence attempting to escape his existential woes with lovers, good deeds, and protecting the poor. (If you ask me he does not succeed).

The closing scene of the work encapsulates the duty of our free will perfectly. At the last scene Clamence pleas to be given the chance to save the jumping girl again so he could not only save her, but save himself. He knows he is guilty. The very last line, he says something to the effect of, its too late! Fortunately!

To me this captures the responsibility of our actions, acceptance of guilt, but also the depressing futility of our attempts to save ourselves from our guilt. Its too late! But, as Camus says, Fortunately!

Would we want to live in a world where we could be entirely innocent? Is it a good thing that we are always guilty?

Thank you for sharing thise videos OP. Had never seen the BBC documentary. I think that his friend was right in his assessment that Camus was thinking of himself when he created Clamence.
