Okay, if the first sentence is just: "It was a queer, sultry summer, the summer they electrocuted the Rosenbergs." It's a big cliche.
If the first sentence is just: "I didn't know what I was doing in New York." It's at least better than the former.
Plath took the liberty to combine both contrasting sentences to make it sound confusing, uninteresting, and long for no reason.
