i never read the books but watched the films. when gandalf comes back and meets with aragorn, legolas, and the dwarf for the first time as gandalf the white, he says he's saruman or what saruman should have been.

it's got nothing to do with skin color but with the state of one's soul. in le morte d'arthur, lancelot comes upon a tournament in which one side clothed entirely in black on black horses is fighting against other knights clothed entirely in white on white horses. lancelot sees that the black side is getting destroyed so he comes to their aid.

he's later punished by god because he took up arms against god's side, the white side, the side of souls not tainted by sin.
