Is Louis CK as intellectual as the general public is going to get? His stand up is philosophical in a plebby kind of way, and his show has elements of avant-garde.
>>
>intellectual
>philosophical
>avant-garde

Don't use words if you don't know what they mean.
>>
>>9028762
Horace and Pete was legitimately patrician tier theater. Not liking Louis in general is a perfect pseud filter
>>
>>9028762
This guy is the biggest pseudo intellectual out there in the media right now. If someone likes him, be wary. Hes got trademark half assed unbaked ideas and themes that dab in counter cultural thought that pseuds love. Shit like "saving money is arrogant". He sucks.
>>
He said he watched Michael Haneke's film The Piano Teacher and enjoyed it, so that's a leg up over 99% of the people in his industry.

I think he dumbs it down for his stand-up, talk show appearances, etc. because he wants to keep his broad audience. Smart move in my opinion.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HbYScltf1c

Not sure if he came up with this on his own but it's definitely a level of enlightenment that's uncommon in mass media.
>>
>>9028762
Horace and Pete was the vanity project of a pseud but I still enjoyed it.

His style of experimentation, which I assume is his work in Better Things, is an intellectual cul-de-sac.

Film and television just isn't cut out for the rigors of high art.

But is this the closest to the avant-garde we have in television currently? Sure, as well as Atlanta and The Young Pope, etc.
>>
>>
>>9028794
>just calls himself a comedian
>hurr pseudo intellectual

How fucking daft are you
>>
>>9028781
I hope you are joking
>>
>>9028826
The Young Pope was a couple good scenes and 90% soap opera tier tripe
>>
>>9028878
>he's a pseud
>>
>>9028762
why are so many comedians unfunny? What the fuck is that shit? Carlin was funny but a kook. Louis is funny but caters too much. Hicks doesn't even tell jokes. Hedberg was good but had too much of a schtick. Stanhope is degenerate soap box ranter. Jesus, Dave Atell? Dave fucking Chapelle? Bill fucking Burr? Jeselnik is Sarah Silverman with a pussy. Any good ones?

>Americans get their profound insights from comedians such as Louis C.K., Bill Maher, Joe Rogan, Trevor Noah, etc

I really have a love/hate relationship with the US. But this is the part where I hate it.
>>
I do stand up at shitty open mics. If you're looking for insight from a comedian than you're an idiot. I'll write a joke with the premise that I voted for Trump in order to build tension in the room that I can knock down later to get a laugh.

Everything in comedy is measured by laughs, looking for a narrative structure or 'deeper truths' is retarded. Go see a play.
>>
>>9028794
He mostly just tells dirty jokes - how is he even pretending to be an "intellectual"?
>>
>>9029089
>I do stand up at shitty open mics
>therefore I know how every comedian who ever lived thinks, and everything about comedy in general
>>
No, he's mass culture trash.

Comedians should stay in their folk artist box like a Bill Burr.
>>
Like carlin said, comedy is a popular art, a vulgar one.
>>
>>9029251
>>9029178
Shakespeare was vulgar mass cultural trash in his time.
>>
>>9029269
Not really
>>
>>9028794
>>
>>9028815
He's just dumbing Heidegger down to american comedy levels tbqh
>>
>>9029269

He was more like Hitchcock. He was wildly popular but also appealed to cultural elites (such as Queen Elizabeth herself).
>>
>>9029275
Even in Hamlet he wrote shitty jokes about whores and pussies. Its funny when pseuds look down on crass today while not even having the reading ability to see it exists throughout the canon.

>>9029311
Yeah thats what I was referring to
>>
>>9028762

Remember the time he fingered his under age daughter until black goo came out? A true philosopher king.

>>9029269
>admired by the most educated men in the country and the fucking Queen
>every generation since has venerated him as the greatest writer in the English language
>top lel it was just vulgar garbage
>>
>>9029673
>>9029693
Louis does explore complex themes, I never seen such good character writing in recent years as in Horace and Pete.
I don't question the pre-emptive brilliance of Shakespeare at all but if you set a radical divide between what he created then and the worth of media that can be made in popular culture today then you're doing disservice to his own legacy.
The point is these off hand criticisms could easily be thrown at him and Joyce.
>>
>>9028878
>hasnt seen Horace and Pete or at least doesn't appreciate what it accomplishes in this day and age
>>
>>9029333
You
Are deliberately ignoring the 99% that is not vulgar to pretend that it's all vulgar. Very sad!
>>
He's smart but you can tell he's a lonely piece of shit that enjoys every tiny piece of positive feedback he gets from his circle-jerk-ey political inserts. He's basically /ourguy/
>>
Jesus christ what an embarassing OP
>>
>>9028944
I guess you are just too intelligent for all of the greatest working comedians today. Hopefully one day we will all be able to appreciate the highly esoteric comedy you consider good.
>>
>>9028762
From when he was asked in an interview what his favourite books were:

I loved the Great Gatsby. I can’t believe they did it in 3D. What the fuck?
Dharma Bums. these are just random. My Travels with Charlie. Grapes of Wrath. Crime and Punishment. Slaughterhouse 5. All Vonnegut when i was a youngster. Catcher in the Rye. 9 Stories. Something by Thomas Mann I can’t remember. Heart of Darkness. I Claudius. The Golden Ass. Hercules My Shipmate. Fire from Heaven. Persian Boy. The Chronicles of Narnia when I was a kid and now my daughters. TR biography. Lots others.

Is he lit?

>>
his act is all about self-deprecating humor and people who gague that as an intellectual meter seems off. he has to have a shtick somehow. i bet most celebrities are less dumb if you know them in person without them trying to appeal to their following. but yea entry level like carlin or hicks.
>>
>>9030900
still he probably has read more than half this board.

They say that race isn't real but how come this fucker got every semitic gene in the pool
>>
Is this some parallel world?

What the fuck do you guys mean when you say avant-garde? This is nothing like anything avant-garde.
>>
>>9028883
The Young Pope plays up its soapiness for laughs.
>>
>>9030915
ideally he should have to have his head on a shtick
>>
>>9030969
probably, yeah, if this board's userbase were comprised of exactly two people, and you weren't referring to the half that is me

>>
>>9028781
Agree. Horace and Pete was incredible. Louis is good as far as TV goes. Horace and Pete is his/a masterpiece though.
>>

when will people stop doing the console wars thing?
>>
>>9028762
i cringed so hard i threw out my back.
sending you the medical bills
>>
>>9029089
it really depends on your conception of humor. If you're doing and saying things just "for laughs", then it's dumb to bother looking further, but if you think true comedy is done by tapping into an essential element of human nature, then it's worth fleshing out.

I've listened to far too much Joe Rogan Experience.
I figure that it's just the culture of comedy in the U.S, to be a top level comedian you have to be a character type. Rogan is the guy who talks about weird shit and fighting, Joey Diaz talks about his stories(that never end and are always hilarious), Stanhope is depressed and says everything in the same depressed tone, Russell Peters makes fun of national origin and race in a clean and simple way, Seinfeld does relationship and character humor, etc.
The culture they talk about when they talk about talking to other comics is about examining reality. They're all wannabe scientists. The guy who wrote the book Sex At Dawn came onto Dante Nero's podcast Beige Phillip, and Dante practically gushed for an hour with him just because all of his life experience was being confirmed by a sciency figure. This is a guy who's probably slept with over a thousand women at least.
Comedians are a strange fusion between actor and philosopher in the U.S, in my opinion it's like watching someone discuss what a disaster their existence is, live.

As for Louis C.K, his show is his sucking off David Lynch's work but he does it really well so I can't complain. He got full control over the show and he pulled a seinfeld with the show, turning his standup into visual format. It's definitely some of the best stuff on TV just because it at least does interesting scripts, but I don't think /lit/ wants to hear that.

His comedy isn't pseudo-intellectual, it's not even intellectual. He's discussing his feelings, that's all, I've never heard him say a joke that wasn't "I'm upset with the state and age of my body but I'm grateful I'm alive because airplanes."

He's a human being in an honest sense. People criticizing him for savoring approval, dumbing down, etc, don't understand what it's like to be undefended, to acknowledge just how full of shit you are not try and identify with it or put on a mask. and he's funny.

Alan Alda was the best thing about that.

I thought the same thing recently, while watching Hannah and Her Sisters.
Look at this scene:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJd3MgIcbnA

Look from 1.00, and try to replace Woody's voice with Louie's. The way he talks, his gestures, the things he's saying.
That could have been a scene taken from Louie.
