I wrote an essay, for a class on Existentialism, arguing that it was about how family, which is the first level of society, tying you to the rest of society - as you see with the boss - and is a generally evident concept, and therefore society, reacted to subjectivity.
I really wanted to do a psychoanalytic interpretation, where the part of the apple thrown at him, and the mother protecting him from his father by strangling, is actually imagined to repress the fact that his mother hates him too, and signifies some form of Freudian "primal scene", but the lecturer was allergic to psychoanalysis and it really wasn't the appropriate class for me to further this interpretation.
I later read in Jameson, though, that both existentialist and psychoanalytic interpretations are overused (haven't read any), and we should use a post-modern/marxist perspective, which as far as I remember he doesn't expand much on this interpretation, and he's not referring to this book exclusively anyway.

Also, you could say that his transformation was a metaphore for the fact that his life was dull. Even if he was sacrificing himself for his family, he is still a materialistic city person whose life was boring.

Seriously, weird to me that there are so little answers by /lit/ on this, as I had studied existencialism and analyzed this novella and Stranger by Camus in 11th-12th grade.

in addition to some of the ideas in this thread, there's some frustrations with modernism and the self in the transformation, in agricultural and hunter gatherer communities the body was a sacred channel between the forces of life and the individual and now in a modern information society (Kafka worked in insurance by day I believe), the body only exists as a monstrous inconvenience of biology

Basically pointing to one of the three destroys any metaphorical explanation givable, so Samsa actually does turn into a roach. This actually ties in with his opinion of religion in the Trial, putting it another way, Samsa commited an unknown crime and, in a similar fashion to olden myth, was turned into a weird object/animal.
