This board has slowly ruined Nietzsche's reputation. Anyone I've spoken with outside this site, who I know either goes here or is at least aware of the culture and mentality, just mocks his work and discards it as useless. And funny enough, a lot of them I've spoken with were also either fascists, anarchists, or right-wing / Republican.

My question is: why did you have to go and ruin a good thing? Why couldn't you just actually read him and not be a meme-spouting pleb? Thanks for making discussing my favorite philosopher on the internet that much harder.
>>
You need to acknowledge that man's ability to discern good and evil is a sin and to fucking trust Jesus.
>>
>someone somewhere disagrees with my views
>why do you guys do it?
Quality post.
>>
>>9018336
>Anyone I've spoken with outside this site, who I know either goes here or is at least aware of the culture and mentality, just mocks his work and discards it as useless.
You fucking normie. You're not supposed to talk about 4chan in the real world.
>>
>>9018345
>someone somewhere
More like dozens that I've spoken with. And it's not disagreeing with me, it's usually just meme-spouting and being a dickhead troll about it.

I have no problem with people disagreeing with him or myself. I thrive on that type of conversation. That's not what I'm complaining about.
>>
>>9018336
Long before I started coming to 4chan or even /lit/ I used to read lots of Nietzsche. He was, in fact, the first philosopher I actively studied.
I was majoring in History and I had a seminary called "History, Memory and Forgetfulness" in which we were supposed to do an essay on something we picked related to the seminary. Immediately I chose Nietzsche's Untimely Meditations and worked my ass off to receive a near perfect score on that seminary. However, Nietzsche fucked History for me, he made me think what I was doing was ultimately useless, and he was one of the main reasons I went back and am now doing computer science. So, that dead guy made an tremendous impact in my life over a hundred years he was dead.

But more related to what you're saying, I guess Nietzsche is many times a gateway philosopher, like how metallica used to introduce kids to metal. There is a lot more than the superficial mainstream ideas that are echoed by mainstream, but I guess it is these more recognizable and misinterpreted ideas that are the object of Nietzsche's criticism.
>>
>>9018355
I think the amount of meme-spouting spergs is justified considering how many teenagers go through the faux-nihilistic stage clumsily quoting Nietzsche's ideas they don't really understand for the sake of being edgy or just not knowing any better.
>>
>>9018360
dude that's badass. I like people who can be genuinely moved by old stuf. actions make you know it's real. thanks

Plebs have thought he was a nazi and a fascist for decades. I don't know what makes you think /lit/ has any kind of social clout.
>>
>>9018336
>anarchists, fascists, or right-wing/republicans
>the worst and most unsubstantiated (by practical reason) ideologies

Nieztche is the only true successor to Kant you fucking pleb.
>>
He's complete garbage. I despise him and everything he stands for, he's a born nation-wrecking cunt. Blame his sister all you want for denigrating his work, but even his actual work is complete garbage and a rip-off of rip-offs.

Never have I met a Nietzsche "fan" who wasn't a teenager or a complete and utter manchild, he's THE edgy philosopher by definition.

Should've changed his name to fucking Stirner while he's at it, at least the latter, despite being trash aswell, was original.

No shit you're getting bad reviews of Nietzsche, you're talking to the ideological demographic that disagrees with him. Nietzsche is a leftist hero and an icon of 19th century philosophy. He is basically, as this anon said >>9018360 intro to philosophy 101 for most people.
>>
>>9018809
>Nietzsche
>the philosopher who was against both slave and master morality
>the philosopher who thought that people were naturally superior or inferior to each other

At least right wingers sort of understand him, you're a full blown retard

>>9018809
The fascists and authoritarians (autocrats in general) do only see one side of Nietzsche, but it's not like they're that far off the mark, or totally wrong.

What's ironic is that there are people on the web now who claim to share those ideologies but then they go and dismiss him for just being insane and other trollsy shit. All in all, extremists and children are retarded.
>>
>>9018336
No one sees Nietzsche as a complex or subtle thinker, simply because he DOES have such a bombastic and annoying effect on some teenagers/people who interpret him simplistically.

Nietzsche was a genius. I don't agree with everything he thought/said/did, obviously, there's no one you can really do that with, but Nietzsche is a great thinker and writer.

Responses like this are idiotic

The answer to your question is that Nietzsche is too often associated with edgy teenagers by people on this board, and is simultaneously well respected in most intellectual circles. Since 4chan culture is defined by who can be the most contrarian, it is natural that denouncing Nietzsche would become the cool thing to do, and that if you claim to like him, that makes you some sort of faggot.
Seriously, just ask any of your friends who discard him to explain why, and you'll see that their understanding of his ideas are probably derived entirely through memes. Just because teenagers like to read him doesn't mean his philosophy is teenage level. His ideas are incredibly pervasive in modern thought and culture, so he is definitely not to be discarded.

What about the fact that most contemporary philosophers don't study Nietzsche and many probably haven't even read him?

I've read maybe 200 pages of him, but from that bit I can't say he's very good.
>>
>>9018353

He was talking about N, not 4chan. You okay?

>talking about N on the net

You're doing it wrong.

>Nietzsche as people's intro to philosophy.

That's the problem, he shouldn't be. That's how most of his shit gets misinterpreted. They literally have to start with the Greeks. Most of his shit was a response to Socrates.
>>
>>9018336
Stop caring so much about what other people think. However, I will say that the majority of Nietzsche's reputation in the public mind is dictated by edgylord teenagers.
>>
>>9018547
>>9018834

Nietzsche is well-respected and virtually everywhere in academic discourse. His ideas are still discussed, not just in terms of historic significance. Posts like yours are embarrassing.
>>
>>9019206
Where'd you get that info? I know that a lot of universities like to have at least one Nietzsche scholar in their philosophy department.
His character as a philosopher is one of rejecting and criticizing older modes of thought, but he's admittedly not very good at clearly providing new ones to take their place. It can be seen as a flaw, but the fact that he simply pointed out new philosophical directions without defining their end is what makes him so timeless.
>>
>>9018940

Why don't you just admit that you haven't read Foucault? He barely ever even mentions colonialism at all, you are thinking of Edward Said, Homi Bhabha and so forth.

>>9018938

Yeah, idiotic because I outgrew a basic bitch philosopher that only mentally stunted people worship, sure.

>>9019218
So is Freud and he's completely discredited.

We studied him in highschool and in the first and second years of Uni, nevermind that his theories have been proven false over and over again and he was just a psycho who wanted to fuck his mother whilst projecting that nonsense and polluting the public mind for nearly a century.

I was fourteen, going in a "god is not real guyzzz!" phase and I've picked a 5€ book from him called the Origin of Tragedy (which to me afterwards turned out to be a ironic title) in which Nietzsche actually talks a lot about the greek mythology, so, in a way, I did start out by the meme, but with a moustached intermediary.

Well, my reading of Foucault and Deleuze is limited, but from what I have gone through, they pretty much do what most other philosophers do: turn Nietzsche's work into more of an academic enterprise and attempt to accentuate certain aspects of him by categorizing him at all.

And I have read Nietzsche fairly thoroughly, including his letters and unpublished notes. The man can't easily be categorized. You can't call him "leftist" or "right" by any means. Nietzsche's philosophy was, to put it poetically, like the perfect mirror — the only other man who comes as close to him in this sense is, ironically, Jesus Christ. Hence why Nietzsche recognized Christ as his ultimate opponent towards the end of his life.

This is not lefty or right-wing, right here; this is chilling and penetrating:

>And do you know what “the world” is to me? Shall I show it to you in my mirror? This world: a monster of energy, without beginning, without end; a firm, iron magnitude of force that does not grow bigger or smaller, that does not expend itself but only transforms itself; as a whole, of unalterable size, a household without expenses or losses, but likewise without increase or income; enclosed by “nothingness” as by a boundary; not something blurry or wasted, not something endlessly extended, but set in a definite space as a definite force, and not a space that might be “empty” here or there, but rather as force throughout, as a play of forces and waves of forces, at the same time one and many, increasing here and at the same time decreasing there; a sea of forces flowing and rushing together, eternally changing, eternally flooding back, with tremendous years of recurrence, with an ebb and a flood of its forms; out of the simplest forms striving toward the most complex, out of the stillest, most rigid, coldest forms striving toward the hottest, most turbulent, most self-contradictory, and then again returning home to the simple out of this abundance, out of the play of contradictions back to the joy of concord, still affirming itself in this uniformity of its courses and its years, blessing itself as that which must return eternally, as a becoming that knows no satiety, no disgust, no weariness: this, my Dionysian world of the eternally self- creating, the eternally self-destroying, this mystery world of the twofold voluptuous delight, my “beyond good and evil,” without goal, unless the joy of the circle is itself a goal; without will, unless a ring feels good will toward itself— do you want a name for this world? A solution for all of its riddles? A light for you, too, you best-concealed, strongest, most intrepid, most midnightly men?— This world is the will to power—and nothing besides! And you yourselves are also this will to power—and nothing besides!

Nietzsche is a childish edgelord, who was fashionable in his time, but his ideas don't have much real merit. He deserves a bad reputation.
