Is this a masterpiece or some pretentious bullshit? Should I give it a try?
Bit of both I guess.
its good as f*** but /lit/ would never admit it since it's not on the meme list. If you look around long enough you'll see it's always the same "pre-approved" books being discussed here.

I'miei just a bit intimidated by it. I hope it's not something sorted of unreadable experimental clusterfuck kinda like Finnegan's Wakefield.

It was kinda intriguing and scar, but it gets boring.
>>8981008
House of Leaves is an enormous fucking meme what are you talking about
>>8980989
Neither but also both
It's good, leave it at that
>>8980989
More the latter than the former to be honest.
neither really.
It's just a cool concept wasted on a story that's good, but not great.

Its various narratives are of various quality. The Navidson sections are great but the Truant sections are a gross slog.
I think it's worth a shot. I wouldn't describe it as either pretentious bs or a masterpiece, just a fun ride with really interesting formatting.

Finnegans Wake is just anot autistic linguistic experiment, it's purposely uncomprensible. This one is more or less understandable.
never read it, but it seems to be working its way into the /lit/ canon

i finished it recently and it is quite a journey
If you like horror, it's there
If you like riddles, it's there
If you like romance, it's there
Paranoia? Ditto
Etc
It also has quite a bit of puzzles, some easy others not so much.
I was looking for something unique and the book delivers, hope you enjoy too
>>8980989
neither, but it's worth a try.
i read it before coming to /lit/; wouldnt call it a "masterpiece" and i say that because it is self contained and incomplete in itself. It is a very enjoyable read and very well thought out but where its seen to be a meme, and why it feels pretentious is its lack of connection to reality even though its still placed as if it is supposed to be. his style is arrogant and unruly but the book is enjoyable for every aspect but that.

I like it quite a lot, but my favourite book(s) is(are) A Series of Unfortunate Events which either makes me a normie pseud or a pseudonormie.
So how's The Familiar in comparison to this?

Depends what you're looking for. If you like weird linguistic stuff like zettles traum, perhaps you'll enjoy. However, I find that it's pretty rough and uninteresting, but that's in large part due to the fact that the inspiration and subjects of HoL are far more to my taste. Magical realism, cosmic horror, metafiction, Greek myth, and Palahniuk type character plots are what I grew up reading, so seeing all of them pureed together in an adults pop up book was very refreshing.
