can someone on /lit/ please help me? i'm a freshman in college studying philosophyand my second semester starts tomorrow. the first semester was very difficult for me and i'm fearful that i'm incapable of doing well and passing in the second.
for some reason, even though i was an avid reader as a child, i'm finding it extremely hard to digest the readings enough to discuss them in class or write about them. even if i read them three times, i have a difficult time remembering much or coming up with anything to say. there are people in my classes who read the reading once, comprehend it, and are able to openly and enthusiastically discuss it in class. even if i read it two or three times, however, nothing comes up in my head in class and i'm not able to clearly articulate my understanding of the text.
am i retarded or something? do i have severe adhd or a visual processing disorder? pls no bully /lit/, this is an honest literature related question on how to improve my reading comprehension.

You might just have some issue with philosophy.
Try taking notes, such as the Cornell method to be able to come up with questions.

do you use computers and cellphones for mindless browsing, porn, and just information overload in general? if so, cut back on the internet including 4ch and other sites like it. when you are reading take your time as you go thru the book. don't focus on finishing, reread complex passages, and take a second to think after reading larger chunks of information. don't just think automatically that because you read it you understand it. also if you smoke weed or use any other drugs habitually, cut back while focusing on a cleaner diet and being mindful. if that doesn't work get an adderall priscription and use it for a few months to pick up better study and organzational skills then taper off.

No alcohol, no drugs, no cigarettes. Stop jacking yourself up on caffeine. Stop masturbating. Go to church.
Come back if that doesn't fix your problem.

take notes as you read?
also, why the fuck would you study philosophy in university? study economics, tack on the philosophy as a double major or just study it on your own time
Take notes and express your opinion on paper. But don't be shy to do it with other people and in class, because the more you do it the easier it will be. REMEMBER, the more you postpone raising your hand, the harder it will be to do it. Don't think about it much, just do it, people don't really care anyway.

Always read with a pencil in your hand. If there is a text in front of you, you should be underlining, starring, circling, and jotting down notes, even if it's just a reminder to come back to a section or a word you don't know. The goal is to not only be more engaged with the text while reading, but when you go back to it, to be able to remember what you were thinking when you read it.

I'm with anon here. Ask your classmates if nothing else seems to work, especially the folks who seem to get it on the first go. I wouldn't have made it through my philosophy courses if I hadn't bounced ideas off my friends and classmates.
It might even be worthwhile to groupread if you can find people willing to do it.
>it's a "/lit/ is webMD" episode
go see a counselor or something

Does your university (library) have some annotated notes to explain the text? Using something like a guide, even if it's basic, can sometimes help unlock how you approach a subject and give you the hint you need to analyse it with your own take.
Honestly, even something like sparknotes.com/philosophy/ethics/ can just give you that kick start to "get" what you're working with, and go from there.
Plus it will remove that block where you feel unable to engage, and you can participate in class, you can ask your peers for their help, and talk to the professor.
