How do I into political and economic theory? I'm pretty much a total layman. Only familiar with Smith, Marx, Keynes, Hayek. Any advice/recs would be appreciated.

Read Mankiw's Principles of Economics, then make your way through the list of further reading at the back of it.

For political theory start with Plato, Aristotle and make your way through the main enlightenment thinkers (Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau)

Your political econ basis doesn't seem too bad. Maybe read some Sraffa and Kalecki.
